Why donate eggs?

Healthy eggs are in growing demand, as hundreds of thousands of women worldwide experience great difficulty when trying to conceive a baby or carrying their pregnancies to term. In many cases, this is because either they cannot produce eggs or because the eggs they produce are of poor quality.

There are many reasons why so many women are unable to have a child with their own eggs. These include advanced maternal age (35+), premature menopause and cancer treatments that eliminate the ability to produce eggs or negatively affect the quality of the eggs. Those relying on egg donation to achieve their dream of parenthood also include women born without ovaries, women who cannot use their own eggs because of genetic reasons, and women who have been undergone repeated unsuccessful In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment, as well as couples considering surrogacy.

Egg donors are the only way these women can have the opportunity to have a child.

The vast majority of egg donors donate for altruistic reasons: to help someone in need of help. Many have seen the anguish of friends or family members who were unable to conceive without an egg donation and want to help – even women they don’t know and will never meet.

Others have experienced receiving help from someone else and want to reciprocate by ‘giving back’ in some way. Many women who hear about egg donation feel that it is a better use for their eggs than simply being lost every month and would rather help another woman.

Although egg donors do receive some compensation for their expenses and effort, this limited amount is rarely the motivation: most egg donors are altruistic women who go beyond what most people are willing to do to help others.
