Where’s the Best Place to Donate Your Eggs? Ask These 3 Questions!
If you have decided to join the very special group of women who selflessly and generously donate their eggs to help other women have the children they could not otherwise have, your next most important decision will be where to make your egg donation.
It is best to make your donation only at a local facility, registered with SASREG, that also offers the technology, expertise and experience to ensure your health, safety and well-being every step of the way. In this article, we share 3 questions every egg donor must ask before deciding where to make this special donation.
Egg donation is an amazing gift to give. It is also a safe procedure when performed by qualified fertility experts in registered and accredited medical facilities.
However, all medical procedures entail some risk, even egg donation, which has very few risks that are very carefully and successfully managed when you donate at the right place.
Here are 3 questions, suggested by our egg donation specialists, that will help you to find the right place to give the amazing gift of an egg donation.
1. Is it local?
When it comes to egg donation, local is lekker.
Here in South Africa, egg donors are well protected by national laws and regulations.
In addition, there are world-class facilities right here in our country which egg donors can choose to donate at, including in “the greatest city on the planet”, as Cape Town is voted year after year by the UK’s “The Telegraph Travel Awards”.
If you are keen on world-class travel destinations, you will be glad to know that you can donate at Cape Fertility no matter where in South Africa you live! If you are selected as a Cape Fertility egg donor, we will arrange for you to travel to Cape Town and stay here for the duration of the egg donation process, at no charge to yourself!
It is better and safer to choose a local place at which to donate eggs. Travelling outside South Africa’s borders to donate eggs exposes egg donors to serious risks. These include, for example, the risk of dealing with an unregistered or even fake agency; having the egg retrieval procedure done at an ill-equipped or poorly-staffed clinic; and – if anything does go wrong – finding themselves all alone far away in foreign country where they may not have legal protection.
In South Africa, strict laws on egg donation are detailed in the National Health Act of 2004, and Chapter 8 on Artificial Fertilization of the National Health Act and regulations govern the activities of egg donation agencies, which should also abide by the SASREG egg donation guidelines as published in 2008.
Don’t take unnecessary risks – take a cautious and careful approach, and be wise when deciding where to donate your eggs.
2. Is it SASREG accredited?
Before you visit any facility where you can donate eggs, make sure that it is registered with SASREG, the Southern African Society for Reproductive Medicine and Gynaecological Endoscopy.
SASREG is a society of fertility experts, drawing on substantial expertise and extensive experience, that provide strict guidelines and protocol procedures to protect the interests of egg donors and egg donation recipients.
SASREG guidelines detail how egg donation is done legally and ethically, to protect the health and well-being of both the egg donors and the egg donation recipients. Here are some examples of these guidelines:

3. Is it a leading world-class facility?
